Training your waist to hit that perfect size and shape isn’t a new concept.

There are ancient Japanese breathing techniques for waist trimming, historical eras of normal corset use, and more.

The thing is, we didn’t have the current culture and climate to trim our waists safely and properly. Waist trainers are in your control, and help you achieve that hourglass figure, if you know what you’re doing.

Waist trainers exist for both men and women, so if you’re a guy and you just found this article, don’t be discouraged. Whether it’s an hourglass or a perfect V-torso shape, it doesn’t take as much as you think to get in shape.

Diet, exercise, that’s all part of it, but what good is it if the weight isn’t falling off in the places you want?

Let’s take a look at the best waist trainers for weight loss, and help you slip into the shape you want.

Best Overall: Perfotek Waist Trimmer for Women

Short summary

Perfotek managed to not only make one of the most inexpensive options out there, but one of the absolute best without compromising on materials. As the best waist trainer for women it comes with a full neoprene construction that’s relatively simple to clean.

Neoprene helps you sweat faster than a lot of other materials do, including latex and rubber. However, the difficulty is in finding the right way to make neoprene fit, which we’ll talk more about later with another product.

Perfotek did a good job with the fit, but they did have room for improvement. It’s not as flexible as it first appears due to that lack of latex, so you’ll have to make sure it’s going to fit you with their sizing chart first.

In fact, it’s not actually made for smaller framed users, so you may find that if you’re not at a certain weight, there’s leftover neoprene that hangs off of the waist trainer just a little bit.

It can be a pain to deal with, but it’s something that you’ll get used to if you do run into that problem. It doesn’t affect the fit at all.

Once it’s on, you begin to sweat within a few short minutes. You can feel a comfortable level of compression as the thermal boost kicks in, and it remains somewhat comfortable during your entire workout.

As mentioned earlier, it’s very easy to keep clean, and a big part of that is the velcro closure that Perfotek used.

The velcro area isn’t as large as it could be, but it’s high-quality and sticks together without fail. This is one you can use for the long haul without worrying about long-term negative effects or overheating, because neoprene has enough give to not constrict too tightly.

Perfotek offers this in black and in a black/pink hybrid, and it’s arguably the best waist trainer you’ll ever buy.

Runner-Up: Waist Trainer by ECOWALSON

Short summary

ECOWALSON made this top-tier best waist trainer for FUPA by adding a little bit more padding in an outward shape near the bottom of the pelvic area.

With latex and cotton, you get a good amount of sweat without it being completely unbreathable. However, there is one big problem that we need to address.

The hook and eye closure system works great to keep you in the waist trainer, but it’s hard to put on properly on its own. You might accidentally have one of the hooks a little tighter than others, which can cause problems in your posture and comfort.

On top of this, they make it very hard to keep these clean. You have to be careful to clean it properly without breaking any of the hooks. The root area that they’re held is visible, but it’s still a bit too easy to accidentally break a hook off.

There’s a three-hook extender included with your purchase, and it’s thankfully 100% removable. This makes it a little bit easier to clean, but it’s also a hassle to put back on.

Thankfully, ECOWALSON actually has sizes beyond just 3X small. You can actually get up to 6X large, which isn’t something that we often see with waist trainers.

As a means of keeping everything tight against your tummy, there are steel bones and double row stitching to keep them in place. At the end of each of the bones, there’s an extra bit of fabric so it doesn’t overlap and compress your skin.

ECOWALSON did a tremendous job of making one of the only modern corsets that actually aren’t designed to make you uncomfortable.

Alternative: YIANNA Women Waist Trainer Belt

Short summary

You’ll see YIANNA again on this list, and that’s because between the pricing and extensive value, they just make some seriously good waist trainers. There’s a great attention to detail here, and with a hook and loop system, it’s completely contoured to your size.

Because of the nature of the closure and how it feels, we’ve named this the best waist trainer for plus-size women.

Apart from coming in an XX-large, there are netted polyester and latex areas that stretch and provide breathability. You want to sweat, but you don’t want to feel completely constricted.

YIANNA went with an acrylic bone design instead of steel, which helps bring down the cost a bit. This won’t be as durable as the ECOWALSON one we just reviewed above, but it’ll do the trick.

There are a total of four acrylic bones in strategic spaces to help you feel comfortable and flexible while you begin to sweat.

Surprisingly, this is also the best waist trainer for men thanks to the acrylic bones. Steel bones aren’t designed to contour with the V-shape that a man’s body transforms into after intense workouts, but if you position the straps on this properly, it feels pretty comfortable.

So where’s the negative side to this great piece of fitness wear? It’s a pain in the neck to clean. Water gets trapped between the lining that holds the acrylic bones and the bones themselves, so it feels like it takes an eternity to dry even if you hang it up in a well-ventilated room.

If you visit their sales page, you’ll also see some hilarious before and after photos that really step up the marketing.

We talk about how effective waist trainers are in the buying guide section below, but suffice to say, it’s not what YIANNA is trying to claim it is. It helps, but you still have to put in the work to make it do its job.

Alternative: BIYHCUY Women Waist Trainer Belt

Short summary

BIYHCUY does a great job of making a versatile waist trainer that fits multiple sizes, from small up to triple XL, but that’s talking about waist dimension.

The main focal point is the triple belt design. Adjust each one to fit you the way you like, mimicking a corset, but without the same kind of hassle.

The contoured design immediately helps you align your spine and improve your posture, so apart from training your waist, it’ll train you to sit up straight and prevent neck slouching as well.

If you’re tall, this just doesn’t appear to work. It gets too loose near the top and doesn’t feel right, and then there’s not enough material along the bottom to really help you out. However, if you’re able to fit into this waist trainer, you’re going to be in for a treat.

It has that same neoprene construction we’ve seen in other waist trainers, except this one has more breathability to it. The point is to sweat, but with the unique way that BIYHCUY designed this, you get just enough ventilation to prevent you from feeling like you’re in an actual sauna.

This opens up the possibility of using it for running, outdoor hiking, deadlifts, or whatever your heart desires.

So where does BIYHCUY stand? They have a great product, some slightly over-exaggerated marketing material, and a bottleneck for tall guys and gals. It’s a great product, just not quite top-shelf, although the sizing and inexpensive price point make it more than worth it.

Alternative: YIANNA Waist Trainer for Women

Short summary

YIANNA does an excellent job of creating sizes from X-small up to 6XL for everyone that wants to get into waist training, which is a huge plus.

The problem is that it doesn’t improve upon the other waist trainer that we talked about when it comes to keeping it clean. Hooks aren’t easy to keep clean, and the sweat is going to try and pour through, so you have to be meticulous when you clean this.

There are three layers of fabric at play to help you sweat it out while also feeling more flexible and comfortable than other corsets allow you to.

With a blend of latex, rubber, and cotton working simultaneously to stretch in the right places and tighten up the rest, it’s a fairly simple fit that won’t leave you desiring more.

Much like other corset-style waist trainers, this helps correct posture and assists in spine alignment. Wear it to the gym, to work, during walks or runs, and for some outdoor activities as well. YIANNA stepped up their durability to ensure you can wear this without incident wherever you go.

Instantly pull in your waistline with a 3-4” reduction, and feel the immediate posture-correcting benefits right as you slip the hooks into place.

While the bottom hem could use a little more TLC (at least on the unit we received and tested), it’s manageable and still stays comfortable throughout the day.

Waist Trainer FAQ

Will Waist Trainer Get Rid of Pooch?

Will Waist Trainer Get Rid of Pooch?

No. A waist trainer will not actually get rid of any weight. You’ll either find completely inaccurate articles online about waist trainers, or you’ll find witch hunts for anyone who uses them. There is a middle ground.

You won’t remove your pooch just by wearing it alone, but the whole point is to use it to help move fat and make it easier to shed those pounds, but alone a waist trainer will not lose the weight for you.

Any tummy pooch you have will still have to be lost through exercise, diet, and diligence. Your weight can’t yo-yo around a lot otherwise it could stick around.

Also, it should be noted for women who have had cesarean sections that your pooch may never go away due to fascia scarring. Sometimes it just doesn’t heal the way you want it to, leaving the c-shelf as it’s commonly referred to.

All the weight loss in the world can’t remove scar tissue or restructure it, which is why at this point, whether you’re fit or not, women will often go in for plastic surgery to take care of a c-shelf.

A waist trainer alone won’t get rid of pooch, but if it’s not caused by scarring, then it can help to move fat around and temporarily give you a slimmer look while working out and dieting does the rest.

How Do You Get a Flat Stomach With a Waist Trainer?

With exercise. Waist trainers are helpful, but will not do the work for you. A waist trainer will simply reshape the body fat around the area that it affects by moving it.

It does not remove the fat, and if you are using a waist trainer that is much too small for you, it can use that fat to pressure your organs and digestive tract.

Waist trainers help move fat around, which may or may not help your body discern where weight loss needs to occur. Typically, men will lose weight from the top down, and women will lose weight from the hips first.

So what does a waist trainer do? Later on, we talk about the afterburn effect, but that’s something that has to be started with exercise (usually resistance training).

Waist trainers help you see your goal, where you want to be, and give you an immediate hourglass figure that you can begin to enjoy while you work to shed the pounds.

Is It Okay to Wear Waist Trainer All Day?

Is It Okay to Wear Waist Trainer All Day?

No. You shouldn’t wear one all day. Instead, try wearing one for about 3-4 hours per day, particularly after you work out.

You’ll not only be body-conscious at that time since you just worked out, but then you can help with the afterburn effect. Basically, your body continues to lose weight after you work out.

When you pop on that waist trainer, it’s going to make you sweat a little. While most of that sweat is just going to be some lost water weight, keeping your body hot while the afterburn effect takes place suggests that it can help prolong the body temperature spike, and help increase the duration of the afterburn effect.

On top of that, while some of the aspects of waist trainers are psychological, that doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing. Working out and then seeing yourself at a goal point (visual changes from the waist trainer) can actually be beneficial and motivating, however this does depend on the person.

Because it does compress your body to some extent, you shouldn’t wear a waist trainer all day. Even some compression gear, if it is too tight, can cause medical problems if you spend too long in them.

Sleep compression gear is usually used for specific medical conditions, but otherwise it should have a daily time limit on it, just like waist trainers.

What Does a Waist Trainer Do for Your Stomach?

Your stomach is a vital organ, and it’s no surprise that in older times, corset use was a popular thing. The problem was, corsets would squeeze a woman’s organs down into the lower half of her body, and cause permanent intestinal damage.

Yeah, corsets were scary, and that doesn’t even begin to cover what it did to a woman’s respiratory system.

So what’s different about waist trainers? They’re easy to control, and they don’t get that tight. There are instructions on how to use them, and those go a long way. Proper use should lead to no shift in the position of your stomach or stomach clenching.

What a waist trainer will do for your stomach is gently compress it, similarly to how compression gear does (again, use caution so you don’t make it too tight). This reduces your hunger, which actually helps you lose weight if you have an overeating problem.

Waist trainers give you that immediate slim-down effect, but that’s not actual weight loss. It helps you track your weight visually so that you know where your goals are.

It’s important to have goals in weight loss, but apart from gently compressing your stomach, waist trainers don’t actually force you to lose weight. Y’know, apart from sweating, but that’s all water weight.

Training Your Way to a Trimmer Waist

Waist trainers have their precautions you need to keep in mind, but for the most part, you’re going to have a fairly simple time using it.

Initially, it’s going to be an adjustment, but it won’t take too long to get used to.

As your body tones, you want it to achieve that picturesque shape that you’ve been after for years. It’s about to become a reality.

To couple your waist trainer with proper weight loss techniques to help expedite your perfect figure, we have guides for cardio machines, water rowers, and more; it’s all just a click away.
