The BEST (Bone, Estrogen, Strength Training) study was one of the largest funded National Institutes of Health research projects to look at the effect of strength training on preventing osteoporosis and sarcopenia in postmenopausal women. Osteoporosis is called the silent disease because it goes unnoticed until the person is diagnosed with low bone density and has a significant fracture risk.
After the age of 40, inactive adults lose a quarter to a third of a pound of muscle a year and gain that much weight in body fat. The loss of bone and muscle mass and the accumulation of body fat are contributing factors to the loss of strength, the development of obesity and the increase in disability in postmenopausal women.
This presentation will share the results of the BEST program, present the BEST exercises for maintaining bone and muscle mass in women, and detail the latest strategies for exercise adherence, including psychological-, social- and wellness-based concepts that support sustained exercise effort. |
