Shoulder Girdle Stabilization
Expand your understanding of the shoulder girdle and specific postrehab exercise design.
By Erin Hughes, MSPT

The shoulder girdle is the most mobile joint in the body and also the least stable. Learn shoulder girdle anatomy and biomechanics and common shoulder dysfunction and injuries, including muscle weakness, tendonitis, bursitis, impingement, rotator cuff tears, AC and SC joint dysfunction, dislocation, biceps tendon rupture, and frozen shoulder. Erin will teach you effective assessment methods to monitor progress and over 100 exercises designed to rehabilitate and restore function and fitness. This course is a must course for professionals working in rehab and postrehab training environments.

Course Objectives:
  • Identify the four muscles of the rotator cuff and explain their function as a part of the shoulder girdle.
  • Recognize the planes of motion and direction of movement allowed at the four shoulder girdle joints.
  • Describe and understand the importance of scapulohumeral rhythm.
  • Identify the common injuries and conditions of the shoulder girdle.
  • Implement client health screening and assessment of the shoulder girdle, and develop an appropriate exercise program based on the client’s current condition.
  • Describe the process of impingement syndrome, the activities that aggravate the condition, and the exercises that can help reduce its occurrence.
  • Understand the mechanism of rotator cuff tears and the client’s options for treatment and exercise.
  • Teach appropriate exercises for the shoulder, including proper positioning, execution, client reminders, and modifications.
