The Overweight Client
Create size-sensitivity training and size-acceptance environments to help all clients achieve their fitness goals.
By Rochelle Rice, MA

This course will increase your awareness, level of compassion, and understanding of some of the challenges large-bodied individuals encounter during movement. You will learn how to create a size-sensitive training environment, encourage size acceptance with your staff and incorporate specific exercises and modifications appropriate for training the client who is overweight. Assist your clients in establishing goals for movement that empower them rather than discourage them!

Course Objectives:
  • Define the term “size sensitivity” and understand how to create a size-sensitive environment.
  • Redefine the goals of the client who is overweight using specific strategies.
  • Teach entrance and exit management and safety guidelines for the home and exercise facility.
  • Teach three breathing techniques.
  • Explain the anatomical approach to program design. List muscle groups that are affected by size and teach the client how to maximize the efficiency of the muscles.
  • Use correct biomechanical techniques to assist the client to properly and effectively perform exercises and functional movement.
  • Outline the direct application of movement modifications to gym equipment and to activities of daily living and quality of life.
  • Instruct the client in proper cardiovascular exercise.
  • Make recommendations for skin care, foot care, and proper clothing for exercise.
  • Identify safety and boundary setting for both the trainer and the client.
  • Demonstrate how to create a long-term relationship with the client through a bond of integrity.
