Running Injuries

50% of Runners Experience Running-Related Injuries

During a mile run, each foot, on average, strikes the ground 1,000 times. The body requires time to heal and adapt to this type of repetitive impact. Micro-tissue tears happen during a normal running workout and, in most instances the body repairs the minor breakdown and becomes stronger. However, when adequate rest is not scheduled into a training plan or training variables are increased too rapidly, overuse or chronic injuries result from recurrent stress. These are the most common form of injury seen in running enthusiasts.

A systematic review of running injuries estimated that 50% of runners experience a running-related injury every year. Novice runners exhibited the highest incidence of injuries, followed by recreational and competitively runners.
